Lazarus A.D. Doesn't Disappoint with Sophomore Effort

Lazarus A.D.'s second album, Black Rivers Flow, hit stores this week, and it was worth the wait. Lazarus A.D. managed to strike the perfect balance between retaining their original sound while still expanding into new territory. The opening track, American Dreams, has a swelling intro that builds into a gain-soaked high-speed riff and eventually reaches the main rhythm section before the vocals come growling in. It's a solid high-energy start to what is a high-energy album. Some of the stand-out tracks include the title track, Black Rivers Flow, as well as Through Your Eyes and Eternal Vengeance. Since its debut, I've given it no less than 10 spins and it gets better with each listten. There's plenty to like, and Lazarus A.D. proved that they aren't a one-album outfit. Mosh Pit Diaries will pay close attention to this boys, as they'll likely find more success if they continue to out out ripping albums such as Black Rivers Flow.

DevilDriver has a proven track record for NOT putting much thought into their album artwork. And I'm ok with this. Over at horror web zine Bloody-Disgusting, DevilDriver's upcoming album art for "Beast" was unveiled (below) and I gotta say, it's still kinda "meh." Some of the comments on B-D say that it looks like artwork for an EP or a single. I agree. Again, not necessarily a bad thing. DevilDriver wants its fans to celebrate its music in the pit, not online or behind some fancy-schmancy artwork. What do you think?

The harrowing "end of the world" song, "World Painted Blood," the title track from Slayer's most recent release, has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Metal Performance." This is the band's fifth Grammy nod, with the band having taken home the prize twice, first for "Eyes of the Insane" in 2006, and then again with "Final Six" in 2007, both in the "Best Metal Performance" category.

In addition to Pantera's 20th Anniversary re-issue of "Cowboys From Hell" the new effort from Accept called "Blood of the Nations" has also found a permanent home in my heavy rotation list. From start to finish this is a kick-ass metal album full of catchy, heavy riffs. Like most metalheads out there, I never paid much attention to this band before now. I always thought of Accept as that "Balls to the Wall" band made famous by Beavis and Butthead back in the day. I got tired of hearing about how great this new album is so I checked it our for myself. Glad I did.

Even though the latest album from All That Remains landed at #10 on The Billboard Top 200 recently (yes, you read that right) they still seem to divide the metal community right down the middle. On one hand, the cranky, old-school, long-haired folks don't understand the sugary-sweet choruses that clash alongside the supremely thrashy riffs and rip-roaring solos. On the other hand, well, you've got fans like me who think these talented lads can do no wrong. Their supposed "radio friendly hit" can be heard below. Whatever. It's metal. And it rocks hard.

The kings of “red dirt metal,” Texas Hippie Coalition have set July 6th for the release of their new album, Rollin’ via Dallas label, Carved Records. Produced by David Prater, the album includes the already familiar and consistently requested first single “Pissed Off and Mad About It” (below). The track will impact metal radio on June 28th. Call me crazy, but I think these guys have the potential to be huge. Except for the lead singer. He already is.

Another Scary Death Metal Band Signs with Another Obscure Label

I really, really dig certain kinds of death and grindcore. The Crown, Cephalic Carnage, Hate Eternal, Behemoth and Unleashed come to mind. And if I am really looking to put myself in a bad mood I might fire up some Braindrill. So for me, there's a very fine line between listenable, likeable death metal and utter crap.

This brings me to this new band called Pyrrhon (pictured). They are yet another obscure extreme band that has signed with another obscure record label. While they definitely have the chops to hang with some of today's death metal heavyweights, I fail to see why they exist. Nothing new here, just an endless barrage of riffs, machine gun drumming and growling that doesn't come together in any sort of meaningful way. Is that the point of death metal? Just a bunch of nonsensical brutality and cookie monster vocals? For me, I need more than that which is why I cite the bands above. They aren't afraid to lay in a 'lil groove or hook to bring all of the noise together.

Pomona, CA's pizza-eating thrash machine, Bonded By Blood will be embarking on the tour of a lifetime with a major influence of theirs, the legendary Exodus on the March of Brutality tour. "We are excited to tour with one of our biggest influences;" says frontman, Jose "Aladdin" Barrales. "I never would have thought that my band might one day tour with the mighty Exodus."

I first listened to Unleashed a few years back when "Hammer Battalion" caught my ear, a great, powerful album full of slammin' riffs. Naturally, I went back a little bit further in the Unleashed catalog to take in "Midvinterblot", another soild album from these Viking metal madmen. Methinks I should go back even further to really experience Unleashed since they've been around for awhile. I'll get there eventually.

Didn't really care for Hellyeah's debut but I do like some of the stuff coming off their sophmore effort, Stampede. "Cowboy Way" is just a good 'ol, whiskey soaked, boot stompin' good time. And now another single has surfaced called "Hell of a Time" which you can listen to via the cool folks at Noisecreep. While not as metal as "Cowboy Way", it's still pretty solid.

CNN is reporting that a bunch of holy rollers plan to picket one of Dio's public services. They believe that he worshipped Satan. It's most likely not true, but even if he did, who cares? He never hurt anyone and he inspired millions. I'd say that's much more admirable behavior than raping a bunch of innocent kids, which seems to be all the rage at church these days.

The following year, I was so psyched when I heard the results of you joining forces with my favorite guitar player. You guys sounded so right for each other and I instantly became Rainbow's #1 fan in Denmark. In the fall of 1976, when you played your first show in Copenhagen, I was literally in the front row and the couple of times we made eye contact you made me feel like the most important person in the world. The news that you guys were staying in town on your day off somehow embedded itself in my brain and I made the pilgrimage to the Plaza Hotel to see if I could somehow grab a picture, an autograph, a moment, anything. A few hours later you came out and were so kind and caring... pictures, autographs and a couple minutes of casual banter. I was on top of the world, inspired and ready for anything. Rainbow came to Copenhagen a couple more times over the next few years and each time you guys blew my mind, and for a good three years were my absolute favorite band on this planet. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to run into you a half dozen times or so and each time you were as kind, caring and gracious as you were in 1976 outside the hotel. When we finally got a chance to play together in Austria in 2007, even though I may not have let on, I was literally transformed back to that little snot nosed kid who you met and inspired 31 years earlier and it was such a fucking honor and a dream come true to share a stage with you and the rest of the legends in Heaven and Hell. A couple of weeks ago when I heard that you were not going to be able to make it to the Sonisphere shows that we would be sharing this June, I wanted to call you and let you know that I was thinking of you and wish you well, but I kind of pussied out, thinking the last thing you needed in your recovery was feeling obligated to take a phone call from a Danish drummer/fan boy. I wish I'd made that call. We will miss you immensely on the dates, and we will be thinking of you with great admiration and affection during that run. It seemed so right to have you out on tour with the so-called “Big Four” since you obviously were one of the main reasons that the four bands even exist. Your ears will definitely be burning during those two weeks because all of us will be talking, reminiscing and sharing stories about how knowing you has made our lives that much better.

Master metal man Ronnie James Dio is still alive! Reports ran rampant across the Internet that the famed singer of Black Sabbath and Heaven and Hell fame had succumbed to stomach cancer. It's not true! Ronnie's wife, Wendy, replied to Blabbermouth's inquiry about the singers health. She said, "I am at the hospital and Ronnie has NOT passed away!!!! He is not doing good, but he is not dead. I will let you know if anything changes. Thank you for your concern." Later, she posted a message to the singer's Twitter profile, "Don't believe the rumors, Ronnie is still hanging in there!!! Hugs, Wendy Dio."

Thank goodness.

Dio has been fighting stomach cancer since late 2009. Heaven and Hell had to cancel its planned summer tour due to Dio's health.

OSI Signs With Metal Blade? Weird...

So both OSI and Metal Blade would agree that it's hard to classify the OSI sound. Yet, the band has signed with Metal Blade. A label that kinda only produces ONE kind of sound: METAL. Here's the lowdown:

OSI (Office Of Strategic Influence), the hard rock duo formed by Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater), has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records! The band has gained a strong underground following since its inception in 2003. OSI already has 3 full length records and an EP in its catalogue of music. Their 2009 album, Blood and includes guests Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree) and Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth). Past participants include Mike Portnoy on the first two albums, Sean Malone and Steven Wilson on the debut, and Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning) on Free. OSI is currently working on their fourth album and Metal Blade debut for a late 2010 release.

Know what else is weird about this? (Warning: Shameless plug alert!) They allowed me to use their song "Head" for the horror film I wrote and produced called "Hair of the Dog". Hit the trailer at the bottom of this page.

Kingdom of Sorrow's Latest Makes Me Very, Very Happy

At first, this Kingdom of Sorrow collaboration between Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed) and Kirk Windstein(Crowbar, Down) seemed like strange bedfellows to me. And because I found their 2008 debut effort to be "meh" I figured Kingdom of Sorrow would fade into obscurity as a one-off project. I love it when I am wrong.

Their latest effort, "Behind the Blackest Tears", (set to drop in June) is nothing short of pure metal genius. Simple and sludgy, groovy and moody this is one monster album with some of the chunkiest, deepest, catchiest riffs I've heard in quite some time. The entire album feels like a fully realized work of art as all of the excellently written songs compliment each other.

I'm gonna be spinning this mother for a LONG time.

Zombie Talks Halloween II, Postmortem

Wasn't a big fan of Rob Zombie's re-imagining of John Carpenter's beloved "Halloween." True, horror geeks the world over are extremely protective of the original Carpenter flick - and rightfully so. The original still holds up as a pretty damn scary, intense, and oddly restrained moviegoing experience. So to say Rob had his work cut out for him going into the delivery of his "Halloween" vision is an understatement. But I would still argue that some of the recent horror re-makes, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Dawn of the Dead" for instance, came out surprisingly well. So given Rob's love for the genre, I'm a little bummed that he wasn't able to deliver the goods on "Halloween" or "Halloween II" - which I am hearing really bad things about.

Anyway, Fangoria magazine has a pretty good interview with Rob about his "Halloween II" experiences and more posted right HERE.

I think he's set to direct a re-make of "The Blob" next. Hope he doesn't screw it up.

DevilDriver Are the New Kings of Modern Day Metal

As I write this, “Resurrection Boulevard” from DevilDriver’s latest effort, Pray For Villains is blasting. I can’t seem to get away from this album. To say it’s a monster, is an extreme understatement. Heavy, groovy, catchy – it’s all here folks, a blistering slab of metal that has set a new standard in what constitutes “fucking awesome.”

I’ve been a devout follower of the mighty DevilDriver from the beginning and I also had the pleasure of interviewing front man Dez Fafara for MAXIM magazine back when he was with Coal Chamber ( a criminally underrated band, IMO). The title of the article was called “How to Survive A Moshpit.” Not surprisingly, Dez had some great insight to share on the subject.

Dez, like many other crazy-ass front men of his ilk, probably have a million stories of survival they can expound upon. There’s a lot to draw from brutal touring schedules, music industry assholes and the struggle to remain relevant in this age of fickle fans and illegal downloading. That said, there aren’t many that can hang with Dez when it comes to his writing chops and willingness to try something new. Combine his unique talents with some of the sickest metal musicians on the planet (seriously, John Boecklin, DevilDrvier’s drummer is not human) and you have a real force to be reckoned with.

I love all of DevilDrvier’s previous efforts. But Pray For Villains is THE album that I always knew they had in them. I could go into a track-by-track breakdown but why bother? Simply put, Pray for Villains is a modern day metal masterpiece. Just like Pantera and Lamb of God, DevilDriver has remained true to their sound, the fans and themselves and they deserve your attention.

Bow down to the new kings of metal, bitches.

"We can't wait for everyone to hear our new album, when we did Enter the Grave two years ago it was made up of songs we had been playing for a few years and some written in the excitement of actually getting to record an album, we were happy to just be making noise but since then we've learnt a few things and we're more interested in making music. Evile fans can expect to hear a more mature offering, an album that concentrates on all aspects of what each member can do; it's a heck of a lot more focused, more satisfying and we're really proud of what we've achieved with it. Russ Russell has helped us to push ourselves to the next level and pull us out of the '80s. The whole retro thing has been cool but we feel it's time for us to leave that behind and stand up for ourselves and show people what we can really do, but fear not, it IS a thrash metal album, it is a 2009 thrash metal album, and we're dying to blow your minds with it."

Municipal Waste Set to Tear Up the Knitting Factory

Fresh off of the biggest North American tour of their career, Richmond, VA's Municipal Waste will soon be doing what they do best once again as they are set to play a European tour beginning in late-June. However, before they even set foot overseas, the band will be playing one last gig in America and it promises to be a sendoff of epic proportions. Municipal Waste (and special guests, Trap Them) will be playing a show in Hollywood on June 10th at The Knitting Factory. This very special show is part of the Scion Metal Show series, sponsored by Scion and Vice. All that you have to do to be there is go to www.scion.com/metalshow and RSVP. Ozzy Osbourne Sues Tony Iommi Over 'Black Sabbath' Trademark

“It is with great regret that I had to resort to legal action against my long term partner, Tony Iommi, but after three years of trying to resolve this issue amicably, I feel I have no other recourse. As of the mid-1990’s, after constant and numerous changes in band members, the brand of ‘Black Sabbath’ was literally in the toilet and Tony Iommi (touring under the name Black Sabbath) was reduced to performing in clubs. Since 1997 when Geezer, Bill and myself rejoined the band, Black Sabbath has returned to its former glory as we headlined sold-out arenas and amphitheatres playing to upwards of 50,000 people at each show around the world.

We worked collectively to restore credibility and bring dignity back to the name ‘Black Sabbath’ which lead to the band being inducted into the UK and US Rock & Roll Hall of Fames in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Throughout the last 12 years, it was my management representatives who oversaw the marketing and quality control of the ‘Black Sabbath’ brand through OZZFEST, touring, merchandising and album reissues. The name “Black Sabbath” now has a worldwide prestige and merchandising value that it would not have had by continuing on the road it was on prior to the 1997 reunion tour.

Tony, I am so sorry it’s had to get to this point by me having to take this action against you. I don’t have the right to speak for Geezer and Bill, but I feel that morally and ethically the trademark should be owned by the four of us equally. I hope that by me taking this first step that it will ultimately end up that way. We’ve all worked too hard and long in our careers to allow you to sell merchandise that features all our faces, old Black Sabbath album covers and band logos, and then you tell us that you own the copyright. We’re all in our 60’s now. The Black Sabbath legacy should live on long after we have all gone. Please do the right thing.”

Children of Bodom Play Abbreviated Set at Roseland Ballroom

Man, poor Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom. Friday night, the band tore into the first two tracks of its set at the No Fear tour at Roseland Ballroom in NYC. After the first two songs, Bodom frontman and shredder Alexi Laiho explained that he had recently fallen from the bunk in his tour bus and broken his shoulder. Dude was rocking out with a busted limb!

The band played one more song and then Laiho vanished from the stage. The rest of the band members followed. Several minutes later, it was announced that Laiho was in too much pain to play any more and Bodom called it a night. The crowd wasn't too happy, but accepted the news with minimal boos.

Later, Mosh Pit Diaries learned that the band officially had to drop out of the tour due to Laiho's injury. The official explanation was that the tour bus took a very sharp turn during the middle of the night and Laiho fell from the top bunk to the floor, landing on his shoulder. Apparently, he didn't realize his shoulder was broken for several days and only visited the hospital when the pain became unbearable.

According to MagaPlatinum.com, "CHILDREN OF BODOM soundman Kal 'K-Man' Kaercher writes on his Twitter page, 'Going home. Sorry. Doctor said [Alexi] should not play. It is better than f--k himself up for good. Three-week break; all should be good then.'"

Bummer for the Children of Bodom fans and, of course, the band itself. Rest up and heal fast, Alexi!

Municipal Waste Spills Plenty of Thrash and Good Times at NYC’s Roseland

MPD was able to catch the recent Lamb of God No Fear Energy Tour at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom with Municipal Waste having the thankless task of being the opening act. Battling against typical opener disadvantages (namely poor sound quality) The Waste was still able to pull off a killer set with an enthusiastic crowd (even for a 7 p.m. kick-off) moshing, surfing and head-banging their seal of approval. Effortlessly tearing through modern day thrash classics like “Sadistic Magician”, “Headbanger Face Rip”, “Beer Pressure” and “The Thrashin’ of the Christ”, The Waste set the appropriate tone for the show by doing what they do best: pummel fans with an overdose of old-school thrash against a party-till-you-puke backdrop.

Waste frontman Tony Foresta deserves an extra-special nod, commanding the stage and the crowd with unstoppable energy, attitude and humor. Between songs, for instance, he’s more than happy to ask: “Do we look like a political band to you?!” before segueing into the finer points of “titty-fucking.” Not surprisingly, the crowd loved every last minute of his giggle-inducing banter. It’s great to see these party animals on a heavyweight metal tour as this exposure will no doubt add to their growing legion of fans.
